What is a cryogenic storage tank?

A cryogenic storage tank is a type of storage container that uses specialized technology to store items at extremely low temperatures. They are designed to keep items such as liquids, gases, and other materials at temperatures below -150°C (−238 °F). This makes them ideal for substances such as propane, natural gas, nitrogen, and oxygen.

Cryogenic storage tanks are usually double-walled with an inner vessel that holds the liquefied gas made of stainless steel and an outer vessel that acts as an insulating layer made of carbon steel. The space between the inner and outer vessel is filled with a vacuum or a highly efficient insulating material, such as perlite or foam, to minimize heat transfer and prevent the escape of stored gases.

Cryogenic storage tanks find widespread applications in various industries due to their ability to store large quantities of liquefied gases efficiently. Some notable applications include:

Energy: Cryogenic storage tanks are used to store liquefied natural gas (LNG), which is a clean and efficient source of energy. LNG can be transported by ships or trucks to different locations and regasified for use.

Medicine: Cryogenic storage tanks are used to store blood products, drugs, biological samples, and other materials that need to be preserved at low temperatures. Cryogenic storage tanks can also be used for cryotherapy, which is a treatment that uses extremely cold temperatures to destroy abnormal cells or tissues.

Aerospace: Cryogenic storage tanks are used to store liquid oxygen and liquid hydrogen, which are the main components of rocket fuel. Cryogenic storage tanks can also be used for storing liquid helium, which is used for cooling superconducting magnets in particle accelerators and MRI machines.
